Dental Hygiene/Periodontal Health

Who doesn't want fresher breath and a winning smile?

Effective hygiene skills at home, combined with regular professional dental cleanings, are the best way for you to keep your smile attractive and your breath fresh. That is why our hygienists, Stacey and Heidi, will take the time to help you improve your home oral hygiene habits in addition to providing you with a gentle, yet meticulous, dental cleaning in our office.

If we discover that you are suffering from gingivitis or more severe gum disease, we may recommend root scaling and planing (see below). These measures can be instrumental in preventing bone loss and preserving your teeth. Recently, evidence has also linked untreated gum disease to an increase in coronary artery disease.

Oral Cancer Screenings

During screenings and dental exams, Dr. Prete and our hygienists will check your oral tissues for lumps, red or white patches or recurring sore areas. Early detection and diagnosis of pathologic oral tissue almost always means the problem can be treated more successfully.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a procedure in which the dental hygienist removes accumulated plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Local anesthetic and/or nitrous oxide are used as needed to insure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, the hygienist carefully cleans and smooths affected root surfaces with specially designed instruments. Dr. Prete may also prescribe medications and special mouth rinses that will help your tissues heal.

This procedure is also very beneficial in controlling unpleasant breath odors.
